Rhoda “Rhoday” Price /rhoda-rhoday-price/ /rhoda-rhoday-price/#respond Wed, 14 Apr 2021 07:55:38 +0000 /?p=1024 Continue reading Rhoda “Rhoday” Price]]> In part, Mercer Family Research by Don Mercer, 1985:

About 1800 the widow and children of Shadrach Mercer moved from Greene County, North Carolina to Madison County, Kentucky. Source of information-D.A.R. Magazine Vol. #70 page 878.

She was married three times. Her second husband was John W. Folks and her third husband was Jephania Harrison.

Rhoda Price Mercer, the widow of Shadrach, married the widower John W. Folks of Greene County, North Carolina; he is found there in the 1800 Census.

Rhoda and John Folks left North Carolina some time after 1800 and settled in Madison County, Kentucky. Most of Rhoda and Shadrach’s children went with them. David Mercer appears on the 1810/11 tax lists in Madison County, Hosea and Martin in 1813 and Silas in 1814. These dates coincide fairly well with the sons reaching their 21st birthdays (the point at which they were eligible to pay taxes). Martin Mercer is an exception, he apparently lived for a while in Tennessee before joining his mother in Madison County.

Hosea Mercer remained in Madison County and appears on the 1820 and 1830 census records there. The remainder of the family moved to Muhlenberg County, Kentucky, in late 1817 or early 1818.

The children of Rhoda and Shadrach are proven by the following documents. The first is from Muhlenberg County Court Minutes, Book 2A, p.336, July 1820:

“On motion of Isiah Vick it is ordered that a dedimus be awarded to John S. Eaves and Edmund Watkins, Esquires for purpose of taking the privy examination of Rhody Vick and Susannah Vick, heirs of Shadrach, deceased, to certain instruments of writing therein expressed and report thereof accordingly.”

Book 2A, page 264 of the Muhlenberg County Court Minutes, dated 1820, refers to a “report of a commission to take the acknowledgement of David Mercer and others from them to David Sarborough…” This relates to the following minutes taken from the same book, page 365, dated October 2, 1820:

“Report of acknowledgement of a conveyance from Shadrach Mercer’s heirs to David Sarborough.”

A final document is taken from Muhlenberg County Deed Book 6, page 277, dated March 4, 1826: ” indenture between Rhoda Folks, part of the first-part and Stephen Vick (her son-in-law) and heirs of Dorcas Moore, late Dorcas Mercer, Rhoda Vick, Elizabeth Martin, wife of Samuel Martin. The said Rhoda Folks for love and Affection she bears her children and grandsons convey title of her dower to 100 acres of land patented to John Folks, my late husband, also 1 sorrel mare now in possession of my son David Mercer-all to be equally divided among my children and grandchildren-estate to be settled in fall.”

Rhoda Mercer Folks completed the above settlement of her property prior to her third marriage to Zephania Harrison in Muhlenberg County on March 30, 1826 (Muhlenberg County Marriage Book #1, p .65, Certificate #764).

In the Old Testament, one of the three Hebrew men thrown into a fiery furnace by King Nebuchadnezzar and rescued by an angel. Used steadily in the 16th-19th centuries.

The following excerpt comes from the extensive Mercer Family History research of the late Don W. Mercer, 1985, Houston, Texas:

Shadrach Mercer was born in Craven County, North Carolina about 1740, if not earlier. This is based on the fact that he was a witness to a deed in Craven County, North Carolina on July 29, 1761. He would have been at least twenty-one years of age at that time for legal purposes. One thing which has hampered research on Shadrach is the relative scarcity of records from the counties in which he either lived or had business dealings. Several of these counties have suffered fires in their courthouses (Craven, Dobbs, and Greene) and some records have been lost.

At the present time there is a break in the trail of Shadrach from 1761 to 1767. Then he is found in Pitt county as a witness to a deed; Remember this would be about five years after Thomas Mercer (Shadrach’s father) moved there. The deed states that “Sullivant(sic) sold land to Thomas (Pitt County, North Carolina Deed Book D, p.105, 1768).

Shadrach also appears as a witness to deeds in Pitt County in 1776 and again in 1787.  The 1776 reference states that “Thomas Mercer and wife Sarah sold land to William Vimes(sic).” The deed names Christopher and Jacob Mercer as brothers of Thomas Mercer and places them in the vicinity of the sale. The references also state that part of this land was a grant that had belonged to Thomas Mercer, father of the above named men. The deed was witnessed by Shadrach Mercer, William Brantley and Thomas Mercer (Pitt county, North Carolina Deed Book F, p. 16 5 March 7, 1776).  Because Shadrach witnessed this deed and the one in 1768 (preceding paragraph) it is reasonable to think he was also a brother of Christopher, Thomas Jr., and Jacob and therefore a son of Thomas Mercer of Pitt county. Another strong piece of kinship evidence comes from the1780 tax list for Dobbs County. This shows that Shadrach, along with Christopher and Thomas. lived within a few houses of one another in the vicinity of Waltonsburg and Speight’s Bridge. This portion of Dobbs County was later named Glasgow County. Shadrach voted for members of the State Legislature in Glasgow County in 1793. The name Glasgow was changed to Greene County in 1797. All this changing of county names can be very confusing. Probably Shadrach and his family stayed in the same area throughout all the changes.

Shadrach appears on the 1790 Dobbs County census but is not on the 1800 listing for any county in North Carolina. It is thought he died in Dobbs (Greene) County, North Carolina between 1797 and 1800. He had four brothers and one sister: Christopher, John, Jacob, Amos and Abigail “Abie(sic)” who married a Bergeron in Dobbs County. Shadrach married Rhoda Price in North Carolina around 1777. She was born in North Carolina in 1761 and died in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky between 1830 and 1840. They had nine children four sons and five daughters.

Shadrach Mercer gave land to Meadow Primitive Baptist Church on SR 303, Walstonburg, NC 10/31/1789.

After the death of Shadrach Mercer his widow Rhoda (Price) Mercer and her children removed to Madison County, Kentucky in 1800. Her eldest son the Rev. Martin Mercer a Baptist minister was married at this time and did not come to Kentucky until 1816. Stephen Vick her son-in-law, who married Susannah Mercer and his brother Isaiah Vick, who later married Rhoda Mercer came with her and lived in Madison County until shortly after 1815 at which time they moved to Muhlenberg County, Kentucky. Hosea, Silas, David, Rhoda and Elizabeth Mercer were small children when they came.

Most of the family except Hosea had moved from Madison County until 1832 at which time he also moved to Muhlenberg County. He was a widower in 1830 with thirteen children, six sons and seven daughters. He married Rachel Groves in Muhlenberg County in 1835.

In 1670, a royal decree directed the “building of storehouses to receive imported merchandise … and tobacco for export” for each of the colony’s 20 counties. This marked the beginning of Norfolk’s importance as a port city, due to its natural deepwater channels. Soon after 1673, the “Half Moone” fort at the site of what is now Town Pointe Park. This fort was constructed due to feared attack by the Dutch, but this threat did not materialize. Norfolk quickly grew in size, and by 1682 a charter for the establishment of the “Towne of Lower Norfolk County” had been issued by Parliament. Norfolk was one of only three cities in the Virginia Colony to receive a royal charter, the other two being Jamestown and Williamsburg. The town initially encompassed a land area northeast of the point of the confluence of the eastern and southern branches of the Elizabeth River (today the point is in downtown). In 1691, a final county subdivision took place when Lower Norfolk County was split to form Norfolk County (present day Norfolk, Chesapeake, and parts of Portsmouth) and Princess Anne County (present day Virginia Beach). Norfolk was incorporated in 1705 and re-chartered as a borough in 1736… more»

When Spain and Portugal came through the Caribbean, they either overlooked the flat island of Barbados or they bypassed it. But in 1625, Captain John Powell landed near modern-day Holetown to claim Barbados for England in the name of King James I. The settlement started in earnest on Feb. 17, 1627 when 80 English settlers and 10 African slaves made their home on the west coast. Many of the early settlers were the misfits of English society: gamblers, kidnappers, political refugees, etc. Younger or second sons of wealthy English families also came to Barbados to claim land, money, and a chance at starting a life of their own. Often, they worked as indentured servants for two to ten years…
